Lady Gaga New Song: Born This Way Lyrics As Parenting Mantra

The song is a real ode to individuality. And Lady Gaga, with her awesome freakshow fashion sense, is clearly a woman who can appreciate individuality. The Born This Way Lyrics celebrate the beauty of difference and the unique qualities inherent in every one of us. I’m sure she meant this as a shoutout to her varied fan base. But through my everpresent mother-colored glasses, I can see how this song could be a message to parents, too.

I’m the mother of two kids with quite different personalities. And I swear I could feel some of those differences when my kids were still fetuses. (Fetii?). So you could say I have good reason to believe in the Born This Way lyrics, both personally and politically.
check out the bridge:
Don’t be a drag, be a queen
Whether you’re broke or evergreen
You’re black, white, beige chola descent
You’re Lebanese, You’re Orient
Whether life’s disabilities
Left you outcast, bullied or teased
Rejoice and love yourself today
Cause baby you we’re born this way
No matter gay, straight, or bi
Lesbian, transgendered life
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to survive
No matter black, white or beige
Chola or Orient made
I’m on the right track baby
I was born to be brave
——
When you’re having a kid, or you have a young one, it’s so easy to stress out about screwing up. You imagine your baby as a lump of clay, ready to be molded into a mess by one wrong move. But kids don’t really work that way. Babies may be unformed, but they’re not total blanks. I am of the firm opinion that kids come into this world with their own personalities. So a parent’s work is less about molding and more about guiding. If you believe in this, it can actually take some of the pressure off.
As I see it, one of the most important things a parent can do is teach a kid to believe in himself as he comes up against all the obstacles the world is bound to throw in his path. So, come on girls, sing along and celebrate the unique life you’re about to bring into the world.
